City Seeks Public Input on Future of Recycling Bins

February 10, 2026

The City is seeking resident input on the future of public recycling bins as officials evaluate ongoing contamination issues, rising costs, and overall program effectiveness. City staff report that a significant portion of materials placed in recycling bins is contaminated with non-recyclable waste such as plastic bags. When contamination occurs, entire loads must be sent to the landfill, increasing costs and reducing environmental benefits. Despite continued education efforts, contamination rates remain high. To ensure community voices are part of the decision-making process, residents are encouraged to weigh in and vote on several options currently under consideration: • Keep the recycling program as it currently operates • Modify the program to accept aluminum and tin cans only, no tinfoil or paper • Eliminate public recycling bins entirely City officials emphasize that no final decision has been made and that public feedback will play a key role in determining the path forward. Residents are encouraged to submit comments or ask questions by emailing City Hall at clerk@cityofnezperce.com or by calling 208-937-1021. Officials acknowledge that any changes may affect convenience for some residents but stress that the goal is to responsibly manage public resources while continuing to explore practical, long-term waste and recycling solutions for the community.
