Burn permits available on EPA website
The EPA and Nez Perce Tribe require those who want to burn yard clippings, brush and other vegetation to get a burn permit. You do not need a burn permit for a campfire.
Permits are free and are available on the EPA’s website. Submit your permit application at least one business day before you want to burn.
Then, call 208-843-9381 or 800-720-4089 after 9 a.m. each morning you want to burn to find out if it is a burn day. Burning is only allowed on burn days during allowed hours. When you call, make sure to leave a message with your name, phone number and what you are burning that day. Your permit is not complete until you have left this message.
You are NOT allowed to burn the following:
- Garbage
- Plastic
- Hazardous waste
- Dead animals or parts of dead animals
- Junked motor vehicles
- Tires
- Asphalt
- Construction or demolition waste
- Treated lumber or timber
- Pesticides or packaging
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- Asbestos
- Pathological organisms
- Insulated wire
- Any material that makes dark smoke other than vegetative materials
Q: Why do I need a permit? A: Smoke from open burning is an air pollutant with effects on air quality and public health especially for children and the elderly.
Question: What are some alternatives to outdoor burning? Answer: Chipping and shredding vegetation for composting. Also, household items such as glass, plastics and paper can be recycled and should not be burned.
Q: How can I burn more cleanly? A: Make sure your fuel is as dry as possible, separate the fire from damp ground and be sure there is enough draft to keep the fire burning hot.
Q: Are there exceptions? A: Cultural, traditional and recreational fires are exempt and do not require a permit.
